Rally for a responsible state budget in Harrisburg tomorrow

If you still havenโ€™t made it to Harrisburg to stand and be counted in the state budget fight, tomorrow is another great opportunity with the Rally for a Responsible Budget, sponsored by the CLEAR Coalition.

Thousands of people will travel from all across Pennsylvania to participate in the rally and meet with their elected officials. The eventโ€™s speakers will be ordinary people โ€“ custodians, teachers, health care workers, seniors โ€“ people who would experience the disastrous effects if the Corbett budget proposal goes through. read more…

Is this the change people want?

Since he became Chancellor almost three years ago, Dr. Cavanaugh has crossed the state (if not the nation), talking about “how our institutions need to change in the 21st century.” The Board of Governor’s latest articulation of the change is their four points of transformation (something of a synonym for change).

Governor Corbett’s March 8 appropriations budget puts Chancellor Cavanaugh’s remarks in stark relief: if PASSHE has to live with the cuts proposed by the governor (approximately 15% of our operating budget), PASSHE will change. read more…

State budget fight continues at House Policy Committee hearing

Continuing the state budget fight, APSCUF President Steve Hicks yesterday provided testimony to the House Democratic Policy Committee, chaired by state Rep. Mike Sturla (Lancaster). Approximately a dozen House members, including state Rep. James Roebuck (Philadelphia), the Education Committee chairman, attended the hearing at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Beyond the points made in the testimony, Hicks responded to questions for 30 minutes. One question was about faculty pay in comparison with regional schools; Hicks responded that PASSHE faculty, according to AAUP numbers out last week, fell below total pay for Penn State branches and had not kept up with regional competitors from New York, New Jersey and Maryland (over the last decade). read more…

Chancellor Cavanaugh addresses higher education funding at Pennsylvania Press Club

State System Chancellor John Cavanaugh spoke today to the Pennsylvania Press Club, a monthly luncheon series that features elected officials and other leaders discussing hot topics in national and state government. Since Gov. Corbett introduced his budget in March and proposed slashing higher education funding, there is no hotter topic in state government right now.

Cavanaugh took the invitation to speak as an opportunity to highlight the high-profile programs located at each of the 15 PASSHE schools and recognize the faculty and staff that have built these programs. He also emphasized the following: read more…
